About

The Spirit of Insight & Awakening
HandsDuring the late 1980s, a small organization was formed to distribute the printed works of the great contemporary sage, Sri Ramana Maharshi. This organization, known as “Ramana Publications,” published a small newsletter known as Pathways, which contained teachings, reminiscences, stories, dialogues, and personal observations. Pathways soon began to grow in readership, and continued to be published and distributed on a “donation-only” basis.

Inner Directions Journal
In 1995 it was decided to “retire” Pathways so that we could launch the newly envisioned Inner Directions Journal. Ramana Publications was also restructured as a nonprofit organization named “Inner Directions.”

Inner-Directions-JournalWhile Pathways was dedicated solely to the teachings of Ramana Maharshi, the Journal was expanded for a more inclusive readership. In fact, the inspiration for the Journal came from the work of the late Arthur Osborne, founding editor of the Mountain Path magazine (published by Sri Ramanasramam) and the definitive biographer of Ramana Maharshi.

The Inner Directions Journal was a high-quality print magazine with author and philosopher Dr. Robert Powell, and Matthew Greenblatt, as the founding editors. Each quarter the Journal presented original articles, interviews, insights, poetry, dialogues, and book reviews, and was one of the leading-edge spiritual periodicals of its time. It was nominated twice by the Utne Reader as “Best new periodical in its class.”

Due to ongoing funding challenges, the Journal underwent several format changes until the final print edition was published nine years later. Production costs were simply too high for a periodical that had a wonderfully dedicated readership, but not enough financial support to supplement its limited circulation.

Publishing Activities
Throughout the 1990s, Inner Directions continued to publish new titles, including a Western edition of the classic book, Talks with Ramana Maharshi. We also began production on several original video titles under the guidance of Academy Award-Winning director, Bertram W. Salzman.

Inner Directions Gathering

In 1998, as part of a fundraising effort, we held the first “Inner Directions Gathering” in La Jolla, California. The initial Gathering, which began as an experiment, grew in popularity and was repeated annually for seven consecutive years. Each Gathering built upon the previous event, creating a unique forum for the expression of nondual wisdom. Some of our presenters included: Douglas Harding, Byron Katie, Eckhart Tolle, Ram Dass, A.H. Almaas, Adyashanti, Coleman Barks, Catherine Ingram, Rabbi Rami Shapiro, Lama Surya Das, and many others. The “Gatherings” became a much-loved annual event that was attended by people throughout the world.

The New Inner Directions Online
Over the years, we’ve worked hard to find creative ways to keep the Journal available and relevant, while continuing to expand the website with vibrant new content. This transition was completed when we moved to a simple and effective online “Member” program. Throughout the Online Journal, you will find regularly posted articles, current media entries, plus content from our comprehensive print archives—all in the spirit of the original publication.
